Don’t Worry, be happy!

Easier said than done, right?  Sometimes “being happy” is beyond our control.  We know that if we battle depression and know that it is a chemical imbalance.  We also know that if we exprerience SADness.  Did you know that there is a mood disorder called SAD, Seasonal Affective Disorder?  It is also known as winter depression or winter blues. It is a mood disorder in which people who have normal mental health throughout most of the year experience depressive symptoms in the winter, or, less frequently, in the summer, spring or autumn, repeatedly, year after year. In the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV), SAD is not a unique mood disorder, but is “a specifier of major depression”. 

Well I am pretty sure that I experience SAD, especially around this time of the year when I’ve just about had enough of the cold weather.  And I live in Atlanta, I can’t imagine all the craziness the northeast is going through!  I have a friend who lives in the Caribbean who often ends her letters to me with “Caribbean Warmth” and I can feel the Caribbean breeze flowing off the screen, I can feel sand between my toes, I can feel the sun barrelling down its rays on my skin.  What a wonderful feeling!  For a moment, just for a moment I feel good and tingly inside. 

Thank god for sunshine!  Thank god for warmth and a change of weather!

    My husband suffers from the mood disorder-SAD and uses a specific light every morning before he begins his day, it really works for him. hang in there, Spring is on its way with lots of sunshine!
